Historic Moment In U.S. Politics
Incumbent U.S. President Joseph Biden announced his withdrawal
In shocking news this morning incumbent U.S. President Joseph Biden announced his withdrawal from the race for a second term marking a historic moment in U.S. politics.
The President’s withdrawal leaves the Democratic party with weighty decisions on a process to nominate and then determine who to nominate to replace the President on the Democratic ticket in November.
Political pressure mounting for months leading up to the Presidents decision with the Biden Harris campaign deflecting swirling questions of the Presidents cognitive abilities. Insiders say whispers could be heard inside the party calling for the President to undergo cognitive testing or step aside for the good of the party in the November elections.
Democratic leaders in recent weeks have struggled to stay on top of political pressure from constituents and wealthy PAC donors. In backroom meetings wealthy donors wondered aloud if a withdrawal by the President would give the Democratic ticket the best chance to win after the poor performance in the first debate.
President Biden debated former President Donald Trump on June 27th who is seeking a second non-consecutive term for President.
The month of July has been grueling on the President. With his age becoming a widening problem for many voters, including supporters within his own party, the debate performance increased the focus on the issue. Interestingly, former President Trump’s age is only four years less than President Biden’s.
The President’s decision today brings an abrupt end to an illustrious career in politics. President Biden’s career in politics spans nearly fifty years. Elected Senator from Delaware in 1972 he held that office until being elected Vice President alonside President Obama in 2009.
During the announcement President Biden said he will serve out the remaining time of his term.
President Biden’s announcement was released through a statement on X.com https://x.com/JoeBiden/status/1815080881981190320 Th New York Times reported https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/21/us/politics/biden-withdrawal-timeline.html the decision to withdraw was not made until Sunday morning and only a handful of his closest staff new of his plan to withdraw. The rest of his staff learned of his plan to withdraw a minute before the announcement was released.
Moments after releasing his announcement to withdraw President Biden endorsed his running mate and Vice President Kamala Harris as his nominee replacement. The endorsement is important because it would put the Biden Harris election apparatus in-place and into the hands of Vice President Harris’s campaign.
The campaign is reported to have nearly $100 Million in campaign funds ready for use by Vice President Harris. Major Democratic leaders such as Bill and Hilary Clinton, as well as others, have already given their endorsement to the Vice President. Major financial backers of democrats like that of George Soros have also given their endorsement to Vice President Harris within hours following President Biden’s announcement to withdraw.
Democrats had a day today. The dynamics of the election in November just got a bit more interesting. There is a tremendous amount at stake for America. Will there be a repeat of a conservative agenda with a Trump win. Or, will Vice President Harris, newly atop the Democrat ticket, roll out a political agenda that resonates with the American public. Stay tuned!
